Thank you for inquiring into "Weaving Old With New," a Global Learning Project about the contributions made by brave newcomers to this great nation. A Global Learning Project (GLP) allows students from different classrooms, school sites or parts of the world to explore topics of global importance, connect together and learn from each other through technology.
Immigration is an experience that connects much of the world. When people emigrate, they come to live permanently in a new country. They start a new life and often weave their old culture with their new culture. In the United States, we are a nation of immigrants and descendants of immigrants.
Join this project and together we will explore the history of immigration in the United States and gain empathy for the experiences of people who left their home country in order to settle here permanently.
What will this project involve?
This GLP is geared toward middle school and high school students, grades 7-12, and aligns with Social Studies standards. Students will research digital articles, videos and images. They will interview a person who has emigrated to the United States to learn about their experiences. It may be a family member, a friend, a teacher or a neighbor. If students don't have a person to interview, they may research a famous/important immigrant instead.
The signature assignment of this GLP will be for students to apply what they have discovered about immigration and the person they interview or research. It can be either a digital quilt or a paper quilt. Students participating in this project will connect with each other by completing a survey, viewing the results, sharing their quilts and posting reflections on each other's projects.
